HIGHLIGHTS

  • The top ski jumpers in the world converged at the RusSki Gorki Jumping Center Saturday to take on the large hill ski jumping event of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.
  • The wind was a constant factor during the competition, forcing the cancelation of a training round, delaying the first round and requiring the jury to adjust jump scores based on the quickly changing conditions.
  • Nick Fairall (Andover, MA) landed the top spot for the USA in 35th, jumping a distance of 119.5 meters and scoring 108.3 that put him just a few spots over the top-30 cutoff to the final round.
  • Nick Alexander (Lebanon, NH) also jumped for Team USA, finishing 48th, while Anders Johnson (Park City, UT) was disqualified for a suit violation.
  • Polish jumper Kamil Stoch flew to victory in the final round with Noriaki Kasai of Japan taking silver and Peter Prevc of Slovenia bronze.
  • The event will be featured on NBC’s Primetime Olympic coverage at 8:00 p.m. EST, and the competition can be viewed in its entirety on NBCOlympics.com.
  • The men’s team jump on Monday Feb. 17 will be the final Olympic event for ski jumping at the 2014 Sochi Games.

QUOTES
Nick Fairall
I definitely had better technique in terms of pushing on the takeoff. That was definitely a good step forward, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. The winds are kind of switching around back and forth, but I think the jury is doing a good job trying to keep it as fair as they can. It is an outdoor sport and there are a few factors you can’t necessarily control, but the jury is doing a good job right now.
