ALTA BADIA, Italy (Dec. 21, 2014)—Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) had a phenomenal second run of giant slalom, skiing from seventh place to second in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup in Alta Badia. Tim Jitloff (Reno, NV) took 12th.
It was a rough track, with the men tackling nasty ruts and icy bumps. If the racers didn’t stay on their line and on the outside ski, the course spit them out. But those types of courses are perfect for Ligety, who—after a disappointing seventh place on the first run—used his classic angles to shred the hill, coming down second run ahead of the field by over a second.

The only one who could beat Ligety was Marcel Hirscher of Austria. After winning both tech races in Are, Sweden, Hirscher of Austria was hungry for another victory. He took the Alta Badia win by almost a second and a half. Just off Ligety’s pace by .03 seconds, Thomas Fanara of France was in third.

Brennan Rubie (Salt Lake City, UT), Mark Engel (Truckee, CA) and David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, CO) did not qualify for a second run.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Hirscher now leads Ligety by 74 points in the Audi FIS Sii World Cup GS standings.
- Ligety sits in fourth place overall, behind Kjetil Jansrud of Norway, Hirscher and Dominik Paris of Italy.
- The men's tour now heads to Madonna di Campiglio, Italy for a night slalom on Monday, then to Santa Caterina, Italy—near Bormio—for a holiday downhill on Dec. 28.
