Baumgartner Qualifies Fifth

STONEHAM, QC (Jan. 24) – Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) was fifth during frigid snowboardcross qualifiers at the FIS Snowboard World Championships at Stoneham. All four U.S. men, out of a large field of 70, were able to make the final cut of 48 riders for finals on Saturday including Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME), Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, MA), and Hagen Kearney (Telluride, CO).  Baumgartner took third at the FIS World Cup opener at Montafon, Austria. The Quebec FIS Snowboard World Championships will be his second appearance; his first at Gangwon, Korea in 2009 landed him in third. FIS Snowboard World Championships continues with Snowboardcross finals on Sat. Jan. 26.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) took the top qualifying U.S. spot in fifth during the FIS Snowboard World Championships at Stoneham.
• Teammates Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME), Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, MA) and Hagen Kearney (Telluride, CO) all qualified for finals out of field of 70.
• Baumgartner took third at the FIS World Cup opener at Montafon, Austria in December.
• At Baumgartner’s first appearance at FIS Snowboard World Championships in 2009 at Gangwon, South Korea he placed third.
• Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA), who was originally named to the team, withdrew with teammate Hagen Kearney (Telluride, CO) taking his start and making finals.
• On the women’s side Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, UT) qualified in 15th.
• FIS Snowboard World Championships continue with snowboardcross finals on Saturday.
