Mt. Hood isn't a bad place to grow up, just ask Sammy Carlson. The young park maestro grew up only a few minutes down the road in Tigard, OR. Being a local at the park and pipe summer camp mecca paid off, as Sammy started collecting X Games hardware in 2007 with a silver in slopestyle. Since then, he's won four more X Games medals including his first gold in 2011 Perhaps more famously known for landing one of the first triple cork 1260s on skis, Carlson is renowned for super-progressive park skiing with an unreal rail presence. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury in January 2012. He focused his efforts on healing and came back in 2013 to compete in the Dew Tour and X Games, but devoted most of his time to his playground: the backcountry. Carlson produced a stellar 90-second edit for ESPN’s Real Ski Backcountry contest, displaying backcountry skills mixed with his own super-progressive skiing style. Beating out tough competition, Carlson won gold and an extra $50k! SAMMY SAYS FIRST TRACKS OFF THE SNOW Philanthropy aside, he's got a movie project in the works called On Top of the Hood, while his Sammy Carlson Invitational (SCI) is in its second year. "I created SCI because it’s cool to push our sport and get the riders out to where I first started skiing and everyone can experience it." When home in Hood River, you can find Calson in the gym, on the tramps and continually training. |
